Work & Industry

WorkIndustryArne L. Kalleberg and Ivar Berg. 1987. Work and Industry: Structures, Markets and Processes. New York: Plenum. ISBN 0-306-42344-8 (cloth).

This book presents a conceptual framework for understanding key work structures and markets and how they emerge and evolve. The authors examine the interrelationships among six key work structures—nation-states, industries, business organizations, occupations, classes and unions—and show how they derive from four types of markets—capital, product, labor, and resource. Their framework provides a systematic way of studying inequality and other issues related to work and industry. Illustrations and examples emphasize the present and future importance of work structures to the individual and to society.
